Instructions for How to Take It

  • Read the Patient Information Leaflet.

    • If there is conflict between what your healthcare provider has told you versus what the leaflet says, it’s generally best to follow your provider’s advice given that they will be aware of your transness and reasons for using oestrogen.

    • In contrast, the leaflet is typically written for cis women using oestrogen for birth control, with no consideration of the needs of transfeminine people using it.

    • However if you have any concerns about which information is best to follow, you can always double check with your provider or another healthcare professional.

  • Dosage:

    • Your prescribed dosage will be stated on your prescription and in the UK will be printed on the label stuck to your medication box.

    • Starting doses typically fall within a standardised range, and then your dose may be adjusted in accordance with blood test results and the effects you are experiencing.

  • Timing

    • Take your dose at the same time each day to maintain consistent hormone levels.

    • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, consult the information and instructions enclosed in the prescription: some will say to skip the missed dose and wait until your next time, while others may say take as soon as possible then continue as normal.

  • With or Without Food

    • Some oral oestrogen medications can be taken with or without food; some may be better to take after food on a full stomach. Follow the guidance in the leaflet that comes with your prescription.

  • Swallowing the Pill

    • Swallow the pill whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet unless instructed by your healthcare provider.

    • It is fine to take your oral oestrogen at the same time alongside other oral HRT, unless they have different timing requirements: such as time as day or whether or not they should be taken with food.

This varies depending on the brand. Some brands are able to be taken both ways due to how the pill is made, such as Elleste Solo; while some are only able to be taken one way. Consult with your medical provider or a pharmacist for specific information regarding your prescription.
