Voice Deepening

  • Your voice is likely to change significantly over time

  • It’s likely that around the 6 months mark you will have experienced a significant deepening of their voice.

  • If you are avoiding telling people you are taking T, it may become impossible to avoid saying something when your voice changes significantly, which is the typical experience

  • Some people begin to notice changes as early as 1 month in, with most people noticing subtle changes and the beginning of voice cracking 2-3 months in

  • But for some people this can take up to 6 months, and occasionally even longer.

  • You may experience a lot of voice cracking as your voice is doing most of its dropping.

  • Your voice will likely continue to change for about 1 year-18 months before fully settling.

  • You will likely lose some of your upper range, although voice training can help prevent this.

  • This loss of range and overall change to your voice– along with the fact your voice will be cracking and continually changing– is something to consider if your voice is important for your work, such as singers and actors.

  • If you are unhappy with your voice even after it has finished dropping, you can see a voice trainer who specialises in trans people (there is an increasing number of trans people offering training themselves) to help you get your voice where you want it to be

Will my voice deepening revert if I stop taking T?

No, your vocal range will remain the same even if you stop testosterone. However, you can use voice training to regain a more stereotypically “feminine” speaking voice, just as transfeminine people do.
